What is Vaginal Laxity?
Vaginal laxity is a common symptom of aging in all women, and particularly common in women who have given birth naturally. This “looseness” leads to decreased enjoyment of intimate relations for both partners, decreased arousal, decreased sensation, and often difficulty with or inability to achieve orgasm. In addition, aging and the loss of critical hormones decreases natural lubrication which can lead to painful or uncomfortable intercourse. Structural changes in the critical peri-urethral tissues lead to worsening stress urinary incontinence (SUI) which may cause women to leak urine when they laugh, jump, exercise, cough, sneeze, or just go about their daily activities.
How Does Viveve® Work?
Viveve® can treat all of these symptoms with a single, painless treatment lasting 30 minutes to 1 hour. Unlike laser therapies, the safe, gentle RF Energy penetrates nearly 1 cm into the tissue, gently stimulating the regrowth of the muscular layer and restoring collagen. Viveve® has been studied extensively around the world in more than 40 countries. Viveve® uses a cryogen cooled monopolar radio frequency technique, which gently heats the tissue without any risk of burns or other damage. The therapy helps to stimulate the epithelial (surface) layer to restore and regenerate collagen, leading to significant improvements in lubrication and sensitivity.
Laser Therapy vs. Viveve®
Many laser treatments used for “vaginal rejuvenation” are just repackaged skin lasers with a different hand piece and work by “burning” the epithelial layer to stimulate tissue regrowth. Laser therapy typically only works to a depth of 1-2 mm, having no effect on the muscular layer, and frequently requiring 3 or more treatments. Many women have experienced burns or painful side effects from laser therapy (thus the recent FDA warning), whereas the cryogen cooled tip of the Viveve® device was specifically designed to prevent burns and damage.
